We have a Winner!

Congratulations to Mary Iandoli, a middle school technology teacher from Watkins Glen, N.Y. She was selected from more than 140 entries to win a free Winter Recess mini-vacation in Ithaca, courtesy of Satori Day Spa Salon & Store, the Courtyard by Marriott Ithaca, and Simeon's Restaurant on the Ithaca Commons.

It was a daunting task to choose a single winner from the long list of worthy nominees. Reading the entries, our prize committee was reminded just how lucky we are to have individuals of such character, commitment and compassion working in our communities every day. But in the end, we could choose only one. Ms. Iandoli's commitment to her students was matched by her commitment to the broader community, and for that we honor her. She is a perfect example of all teachers who make a positive impact on the lives of those around them. As her nominator noted:

"Ms. Iandoli always puts her students first. For once in her life, she deserves to be the one pampered. She opens her heart to each and every student, willing them to succeed no matter the obstacles. This dedication is matched by a creative spirit that has brought new energy and cohesiveness to the school. Examples include hands-on research projects, grants to bring students to Cornell, and a Mexican culture night that brought hundreds of students and their families to school for a community dinner. Starting with the students, but also including parents and the community, Mary has developed an esprit de corps that is making a real difference. She also gives selflessly to the staff and faculty of the school, organizing gift giving and parties, re-building a sense of community. All this giving however comes at a "karmic" cost. Ms. Iandoli needs more than an apple, she needs some pampering! Please reward her the mini-vacation she so richly deserves."
