Records show there are more than 200 paintings in the permanent collection of the History Center in Tompkins County. Stored in crates, cartons and other containers, the artwork has been unseen for generations—until today. This winter, the History Center reveals all in its “Historic Paintings Unwrapped” project in which the crates will be opened, a few at a time, and the contents displayed for everyone to see. There will be no rhyme or reason to what is opened—just fun and surprises seeing what comes up next. Each painting will be on display for about a month through April, 2010. As the staff hangs each piece, they will assess the artwork for condition, retention, future storage and improved record-keeping. Who knows, there might even be a masterpiece uncovered in the process. See for yourself at the History Center, 401 E. State Street, Suite 100, in the Gateway Center, just one block from The Ithaca Commons. Information: 607.273.8284 or online at www.TheHistoryCenter.net.
