Writers and readers are in for a special treat as Cornell kicks off its annual Spring Reading Series with Philipp Meyer, whose acclaimed debut novel, “American Rust,” has been hailed by critics as “the great new American novel” and a candidate for the Pulitzer Prize. Meyer honed his craft with short stories in McSweeney’s and The Iowa Review, then burst on the literary scene in 2009 with the release of “American Rust.” The timely story of economic and personal tragedy in a decaying rustbelt town earned comparisons to Faulkner and Steinbeck. Said The New York Times, “‘American Rust’ announces the arrival of a gifted new writer — a writer who understands how place and personality and circumstance can converge to create the perfect storm of tragedy.” Meyer appears in Ithaca as part of the Cornell Creative Writing program’s Spring Reading Series. Free admission.
